Dear Editor,

The PPP's denial that the President made certain accusations at a meeting of the PPP's Central committee recently may be an internal matter of the PPP and may be no business of outsiders. that is one side of it.

It is our business, though, when we are expected to rely on these same persons and the same Central Committee and the same officials for statements on whether their party or government officials were involved in a hit squad.

Assuming that they had problems with truth over a non criminal accusation,we can assume that they will be even more unlikely to admit an accusation of being involved in a hit squad,in corruption, or in other crimes.

We have a constitution which protects any President of Guyana and allows him or her freedom from court proceedings for anything done even in a private capacity. No crime is excluded,if he were minded to commit any crime. But the oath of office binds a President to 'bear true faith and allegiance' to the people of Guyana-including his own supporters. That means they are always in oath.

What are people to understand when these rulers tell government employees that there is no money; when they give a version different from that of others they bargain with, when they tell UG graduates that there are no vacancies; when the Minister's nominees decide on contract bids;when they give answers in the National Assembly or make solemn statements about anything.

A nation largely of young people is witness to a large dilemma. By majority vote, the President did not accuse his comrade and colleague. By a minority vote ,he did. In this case most of the popular jury, the people, will conclude that a victory for the majority of the PPP.s Central Committee is a defeat of honour and common integrity. We will see the majority as bare-faced.

The act of senior party members in signing that clearly false majority declaration, merely to discredit Mr Ramjattan, is equal to an act of repression of the people including their supporters. it is a thoughtless incitement against truth.

We should not think that Karma is a "Hindu" truth. Those who signed the majority declaration in support of the party line run the risk of being doubted even when they find it convenient to report accurately.

The sad thing is that they are undermining, I hoped not finally, the basis of discussion in what is left of our political culture.

Yours respectfully,
'Eusi Kwayana
